Vital Substance
Qi is the basic element that creates this world. Ancient philosophy believes that everything is created by qi. "Jing Qi", the essence part of qi, is the fundamental substance of human. There are two origins of qi: heired from parent since conceived, and taken from food essence and fresh air. Its functions include propelling, protecting, regulating essences, blood, and body fluids; warming to generate body heat; and helping transport of nutrient through blood.
There are 4 types of qi existing in our body:
Original qi: the most fundamental qi stored in kidney, it exists everywhere in our body.
Breathing qi: the qi combined with food essence and fresh air in lungs.
Nutritional qi: the qi supplies nutrition throughout the body via blood vessels.
Protection qi: the qi is also called anti-pathogen that runs along with blood vessels.
Blood consists of food essences and body fluid. According to Chinese medicine, blood is mainly generated from spleen and stomach after extracting the food essences, functioning together with heart, liver and kidney. It nourishes all organs and tissues of our body and is the mind activities' fundamental element. For instance, "sufficient blood supply, sound mind activity"
Body Fluid at normal level occupies 70% of our body weight. It includes all the body fluid (except blood) inside the organs and tissues as well as the excretion like tears, saliva, lubricants in intestines and gastric acid in stomach, etc. Body fluid is extracted from food essence in spleen and stomach, and the water component processed after small and large intestines. Its functions consist of nourishing organs and tissues, generating blood, regulating Yin Yang, discharge by-product of metabolism, and carring qi around the body.
