Yin Yang Theory

Before we learn about Yin-Yang, we have to understand "Jing Qi" (Essential Air) theory. Qi is the basic element that creates this world. Ancient philosophy believes that everything is created by qi. Qi is microscopic, dsipersed, invisible and dynamic. "Jing Qi" is the essence part of qi, and it forms all kinds of life including human. The very beginning of world was empty until qi was created by universe. The clean, rising, light and thin qi gathered made up the sky while the heavy, thick and still qi gathered made up the earth. So there are two states of qi: invisible or physically visible. Another philosophy stated that motion of qi is continuously changing called Qi Fa (Air Mechanism). Every activities or phenomenon is the result of "qi fa" including the plant or animal borned, growing, aging, or died. If the "qi fa" stops, then everything will not change and stagnant. The other characteristic of qi is the medium between everything and the most essential part of qi creates human whereas the less essential parts form animal, the lesser essential parts form insect, plants, inorganic matter, and so on.

Yin-Yang symbolizes both everything and its counterparts. According to the oldest history that mentioned about Yin-Yang refered only to the Sun. When we are facing the Sun, it is Yang and when we are is backing the Sun, it is called Yin. From this simple idea, philosophers interpreted and made up the conclusion that everything has the Yin and Yang characteristics. The following are some examples of Yin and Yang:
Yang Yin
Sun Moon
Day Night
Heat Cold
501 10
100 50
Exterior Interior
Upward Downward
Bright Dark
Summer Spring
Autumn Winter
Man Woman
Fu2 Zang
Skin Muscle
Upper Lower
Head Chest
Chest Legs
Active Passive
Loud Silent
Sociable Shy

Yin-Yang is always opposite to each other: If there is sky, there is another part called earth; if there is day, there is night; if there is fire, there is water; if there is heat, there is cold, etc.

1. Yin-Yang mutally exists in matter or phenomenon: The water is "hot" when it is comparing to the temperature cooler, otherwise "hot" will be meaningless. Comparing to 10 degree Celcius water, 50 degree Celcius water is hotter, but when comparing to 100 degree Celcius, 50 degree Celcius is now colder.

Yin and Yang interact, nature phenomena and forms of lives created: It is based on the theory of "qi fa" mechanism.

Yin and Yang control each other: When Yang is too active, passive Yin will control Yang to calm down. When it is cold, heat will make it warmer. Yin and Yang will try to change to relative equilibrium state.

Yin and Yang is inter-dependent: Yin will not exist if there is no Yang, and vice versa.

Yin Yang are changing to each other: Summer will become winter and changes back to summer and so on; day becomes night and changes back to day and so on.

2. Human is made from Yin and Yang and intergrated as a whole organization. Zang Fu organs separate into Ying and Yang, Zang is Yin and Fu is Yang because of the characteristic of Zang is for storage while Fu is for discharge.

Yin Yang applies on TCM on promotion of health, prevention of disease, pharmacodynamics, diagnosis, and treatments.
